Wales Reflection: NYUL Experience in Wales

Admittedly, Wales was the first country I’ve had an opportunity to visit since travelling to London in August. And so while Wales is technically part of the United Kingdom, I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to travel “internationally,” take part in community service, and ultimately learn a bit more about the community we had served.

The steep and slippery slope up the hill was accompanied by many falls and subsequent muddy stains on my clothes. That being said, the view at the top of the hill made the strenuous hike completely worth it. The various shades of green were simply breathtaking and visually soothing. For a couple hours, we removed gorse (poison-like bushes) and then brought the gorse downhill to a huge bonfire that we had created. We used tools and gear that made our task easier.

The Welsh remove gorse in order to make way for the growth of more beneficial vegetation. I found that the simplicity of Welsh culture including but not limited to the small cities, legends (wooden spoons, dragons), and the importance of agriculture, was really cool. I definitely gained a great deal of appreciation for what life in the U.K. is like outside of London.

Ultimately, this trip was really fun and at the very least culturally enriching. Big thanks to Toni and all the people who made this trip all that it was! In true NYU fashion, the accommodations were amazing, and being with great friends enhanced this experience. This trip has made me very eager to see what other volunteering opportunities NYU London has in store.
